Let’s face it, the last two years have been an emotional rollercoaster - from lockdowns to Brexit, to rising energy bills, and now war in Ukraine - the news has been a heavy one to digest. Add to that any personal struggles you might be facing and it’s easy to see why we are battling a mental health epidemic never seen before.

As a business that deeply cares about it’s employees, we knew we needed to take action. That’s why, over the past year, we’ve worked closely with Mental Health First Aid England to train and develop our very own team of Mental Health First Aiders.

Why we took action?

At Dee Set we understand that life gets on top of us sometimes - it might be work-related, it might be more personal. No matter what our staff are going through, Dee Set recognised the need to invest in training, in order to bring together a specialist team that is here to listen without stigma or judgement, when you need a good talk.

We found ourselves concerned that statistics from last year showed that over 800,000 workers are suffering from work related stress, depression or anxiety, far higher than before the pandemic - so it was essential we addressed this issue within our own Dee Set family.

What we did?

Whilst we pride ourselves on always hiring friendly team members who look out for their colleagues, we needed more in-depth, specialist training to ensure we were offering the best support we could if someone was having a tough time.

We reached out to Mental Health First Aid England, who developed and launched the MHFA (Mental Health First Aiders) programme to allow employers to help their work force cope with low points and down days, that stop us all from living life to the fullest.

By working closely with the MHFA instructors, Dee Set were able to train 16 Mental Health First Aiders, who have already helped over 200 colleagues across the business. The Mental Health First Aiders are always on hand to support staff members that may find themselves feeling out of sorts.

What our trained Mental Health First Aiders can help with:

Reaching out to the MHFA team or stopping in for a regular chat about worries, no matter how small or insignificant you think they might be, is a great way to prevent the little stuff building up into bigger issues.

Mental health is very close to my heart and like so many of us, I have struggled in the past. Over time I have developed different coping strategies. I have a real passion for removing the stigma surrounding mental health and it was important to me that we were able to offer this support to all of our colleagues across the business. I am proud to be a Mental Health First Aider.

Dee Set Logistics LTD provide an end-to-end retail solution to five of the biggest retailers in the UK and have just been awarded accreditation for Zero Waste to Landfill, certified by Valpak ZWTL.

After 20 years of successfully growing the family-run business that now employees a 4,000 strong workforce across the UK, Dee Set strongly believe that industry collectively needs to roll up its sleeves and take responsibility for some of the planet's most significant environmental challenges.

The accreditation recognises the work being done to reduce Waste to Landfill, which includes recycling 228 tonnes of plastic, card and metal this year, which equates to almost 70% of waste produced. The remaining waste is then used to produce electricity through incineration, with the ash even being used to make building products!

Dee Set acquired Tactical Solutions in 2020 to strengthen the business position in the FMCG marketplace. Tactical Solutions were also accredited as being a Carbon Neutral business last month with a commitment to offset 809,000 kgs of the company’s carbon emissions, whilst also supporting deforestation, cleaning up the oceans and providing clean cookstoves in the Southern hemisphere.

Rob Slaski, Chief Operating Officer for Dee Set commented, “As leading partners in the FMCG industry, we are keen to act responsibly and support the environment by committing to projects that reduce waste to landfill and increase sustainable energies. It’s becoming more and more important not only to us as a business, but for our customers and employees and will play an important role as we continue to grow.”
