A group of mental-health first aiders at locally based, Dee Set Group, have just completed a two-day fundraising mission to raise both money and awareness for the fantastic work of Mind - the national mental health charity.

Pamela Buso, Q, and Sarah Jones, who are all newly trained as mental health first aiders for the company, set off on a two-day walk alongside colleagues Jennie Dalton, Mark Thwaite and Audrey Scott. The route took the walkers from Whitchurch at 8.30 on Sunday morning, arriving at Dee Set offices on Monday afternoon having completed 37 miles.

Having already raised over £1,000, the walkers’ aim is to raise at least £2,000, as well as boost essential awareness of the importance of supporting those facing mental health difficulties.

During their journey, the walking team were interviewed live by BBC Radio Shropshire, CAT Radio and, later, management at Tesco Kidsgrove Superstore, who welcomed the group into their staff canteen for a hot drink and rest bite from the terrible weather. The Tesco colleagues involved in the gesture have since been awarded with prestigious Value Awards on behalf of the CEO.

Pamela Buso, walk organiser and People Manager at Dee Set, said: “Completing this walk means so much to everyone involved. We’re in a mental health epidemic and almost all of us know someone, perhaps even ourselves, who has been impacted by this issue. As newly qualified mental health first-aiders for Dee Set, we’re passionate about raising awareness and, ultimately, we just want to give back to the amazing charities like Mind who do so much for people when they need it most.

“With a few wrong turns along the way and horrendous weather to contend with, the level of perseverance and teamwork required was so much greater than we ever imagined, but so too was the sense of achievement. We want to thank everyone who supported us along the way, from the generous Tesco staff to the school children who clapped as we passed their school gates... We made it through with your help and we now hope to reach our £2,000 target so we can send help to those who need it most.”

Ian O’Reilly, Head of Community and Events Fundraising at Mind, also commented: “We are really grateful to the employees of Dee Set Personnel for choosing to support Mind through walking an impressive 37 miles from Whitchurch, Shropshire, to their head office in Fenton, Stoke on Trent.

“It continues to be a really challenging time and many of us will be feeling the impact of the pandemic on our mental health and wellbeing, especially for those of us with existing mental health problems. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, and it’s so important that no one has to face this alone."

“Every donation that Mind receives allows us to campaign to improve services and provide information and support. This includes through services such as Mind Infoline, legal line and our online peer support community for adults, Side by Side, so we can be there for as many people who need us as possible.”
